The Tamar Ministry (often referred to as simply Tamar) is a faith-rooted, survivor-led, and Christian-based organization focused on providing long-term restoration and vocational training to women in India who have been trafficked, abused, or exploited.

While many, or potentially all, of the specific activities described in web search results refer to activities in Thailand,  the Tamar Ministry was birthed in Mumbai, India in 2007 by partners such as Woodmont Hills Church, alongside P.D. Prasada Rao, to specifically address the plight of young girls in India's red-light districts.

Key Aspects of the Tamar Ministry:

  • Mission & Focus: The ministry works in the heart of red-light districts (initially in Mumbai, with broader operations now associated in other parts of India) to offer women in prostitution a way out, providing a safe environment for healing, counseling, resources, job-training, and discipleship.

  • Survivor-Led Approach: Tamar is led by survivors of trafficking who provide mentorship and support, focusing on holistic restoration—spirit, soul, and body.

  • Reintegration Activities: The ministry provides vocational training to help women build new, sustainable livelihoods. These skills include handicrafts (card making, jewelry, etc.), cooking, product management, and government recognized sewing and tailoring skills.

  • Outreach & Prevention: Staff and volunteers conduct outreach directly into red-light districts, and provide safe-houses for those who are rescued. They also work on prevention by connecting with vulnerable populations in communities where the  need is great due to high levels of abuse.

  • Healing & Care: The ministry provides medical camps where a licensed doctor is giving check-ups and medical treatment.  These camps are inclusive, meaning that women who have joined the ministry and those of the community are all welcome.

  • Support for Children: The ministry provides care and support for the children of the women it helps. Every week, two to three lunches are provided to Tamar children to help their nutrition and their need for friendship in the community. On occasion, the children are taken on special outings to the beach or a park.

  • Counseling: Regular sessions are provided for any of the women, but especially, for those who have recently left the red-light district activities.  The counseling is aimed at supplying emotional, spiritual, and psychological  support.
